Basic information
Sremska Mitrovica is the centre of the Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica in the District of Srem. It is the largest town in Srem, the administrative centre of the District of Srem and one of the oldest towns in Vojvodina and Serbia. The town is situated on the left bank of the Sava River.
The ancient city of Sirmium, which was located on the territory where Sremska Mitrovica is nowadays, was the capital of the Roman Empire during the period of Tetrarchy. It was also called ‘the glorious mother of all cities’. Many Roman emperors were born in or near Sirmium.
Sremska Mitrovica is located in the northwest of Serbia and southwest of Vojvodina, at the junction of three different morphological units: the Plain of Srem, the Plain of Mačva and the foothills of Fruška Gora. The town is situated at 44 degrees and 58 minutes of north latitude and 19 degrees and 36 minutes of east longitude, and it stretches along the south line of the loess terrace of Srem and along the alluvial plain of the Sava River, at the average altitude of 82 metres. The town of Sremska Mitrovica consists of the town – the conurbation of three settlements: Sremska Mitrovica and Laćarak on the left and Mačvanska Mitrovica on the right bank of the Sava River and 23 villages.
There are popular excursion sites and recreation centres in the National Park of Fruška Gora near Sremska Mitrovica (Ležimir and Letenka), as well as numerous monasteries of Fruška Gora. The Sava River provides the great potential for the river tourism due to the fact that its river basin near Sremska Mitrovica is perfect for this kind of recreation (the town has a modern quay with the possibility for ships to berth, as well as the tidy beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Serbia). Another natural attraction is the special nature reserve Zasavica, and the projects to present the archeological and architectural potentials of the town have been devised as well.
