Nowadays Sremska Mitrovica is one of the most developed municipalities of Vojvodina and Serbia and it is an important administrative, economic, cultural and educational centre of Srem, being the centre of the County of Srem. The town of Sremska Mitrovica, together with its surrounding settlements Laćarak and Mačvanska Mitrovica, has more than 60,000 inhabitants. The municipality covers 730 km2 and there are 26 settlements with more than 100,000 inhabitants in them.
The settlements are: Bešenovački Pranjavor, Bešenovo, Bosut, Veliki Radinci, Grgurevci, Divoš, Zasavica I, Zasavica II, Jarak, Kuzmin, Laćarak, Ležimir, Manđelos, Martinci, Mačvanska Mitrovica, Noćaj, Ravnje, Radenković, Salaš Noćajski, Sremska Rača, Stara Bingula, Čalma, Šašinci, Šišatovac, Šuljam, and the town of Sremska Mitrovica.
There is an impressive pedestrian bridge built across the Sava River which connects the centre of Sremska Mitrovica and Mačvanska Mitrovica.
The geographic position of the town is highly favorable due to the proximity of motorway, international railroad, ‘Nikola Tesla’ airport (60km away), the sports airport in Veliki Radinci, as well as to the fact that the town is situated on the Sava River and its waterway connects it to important destinatios all over the European continent.
Another characteristic of a modern urban settlement that this town has is a modern regional road R-103 with two traffic lanes and two roundabouts. The road infrastructure is continuously being revitalized, so the city, besides having better local roads, has recently got two more roundabouts in residental blocks.
The high water level of the Sava River has been under control since the embankments were built and they have valuable and longterm importance for this town which is situated along both river banks of the Sava River.
