The Museum of Srem is a cultural institution, founded in 1885, which researches the material culture of a great heritage, both in Sremska Mitrovica and entire Srem, and displays its artifacts on permanent and occassional exhibitions.

The museum is organized to function as a complex consisting of the archaeology, history, history of art and ethnology department, and it also has collections of the artifacts of nature and numismatics. It is interesting that the museum consists of two buildings that date back from the 18th century – Brigadirquartier and the mansion of the Bajić family.
There is ‘The Centre for the Archaeological Research and Documents of Sirmium’ within the museum, together with the permanent exhibition of artifacts up to the 14th century which includes the lapidarium. In lapidarium, there are the remains of a villae urbanae and its room with apse and a beautiful floor mosaic with geometrical ornaments can be seen there. Such a finding on the very site of a museum is extremely rare in the world.

Some of the artifacts of tangible culture kept in the Museum of Srem are:

  1. The skull of a giant deer from the late Pleistocene that belongs to the species Megaloceros giganteus (Blum), which has been protected by law as a unique artifact of nature;
  2.  The sundial with the sculptures of Atlas, Heracles and Ifikles;
  3.  Olearum;
  4.  Small Roman sculptures (the statues of Mercury, Lares, Apollo);
  5.  Roman surgical instruments;
  6.  The fragments of the fresco of Harpocrates;
  7.  The rare gold coins of Constantine the Great;
  8.  The gold reliquary;
  9.  The Avar gold belt set from the 7th century;
  10.  The collection of icons and civic portraits from the period between the 17th and 20th century;
  11.  The collection of manuscripts from the monasteries of Fruska Gora
