The populous mother of cities
Sremska Mitrovica is an urban settlement and the seat of the local self-government unit with the same name. The ancient city of Sirmium, which lay on the territory of the present-day Sremska Mitrovica, was the capital of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy. It used to be called “a famous and populous mother of cities”. Numerous Roman emperors were born in Sirmium or its vicinity, namely: Herennius Etruscus (251), Hostilian (251), Decius Trajan (249-251), Claudius II (268-270), Quintillus (270), Aurelian (270-275), Probus (276-282), Maximilian (285-310), Constantius II (337-361) and Gratian (367-383).
Today Sremska Mitrovica is one of the most prosperous municipalities in Vojvodina and Serbia and is an important administrative, economic, cultural and educational center of Srem and the hub of the entire district. Together with the suburban settlements Lacarak and Macvanska Mitrovica the city has a population of over 60,000 inhabitants. The municipality covers 730km2 and has 26 populated settlements with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
The settlements are: Besenovacki Pranjavor, Besenovo, Bosut, Veliki Radinci, Grgurevci, Divos, Zasavica I, Zasavica II, Jarak, Kuzmin, Lacarak, Lezimir, Mandjelos, Martinci, Macvanska Mitrovica, Nocaj, Ravnje, Radenkovic, Salas Nocajski, Sremska Raca, Stara Bingula, Calma, Sasinci, Sisatovac, Suljam, and the city of Sremska Mitrovica.
An imposing pedestrian bridge over the river Sava connects the city cores of Sremska and Macvanska Mitrovica.
The extremely favourable geographical position of the city relies on the vicinity of the motorway, an international railroad, Nikola Tesla airport (60km away), a recreational airport in Veliki Radinci, as well as the fact that the city lies on the banks of the river Sava whose waterway connects it to important destinations all over Europe.
The features of a contemporary urban environment include a modern regional road R-103 with four lanes and two roundabouts. The road infrastructure is continuously revitalized so the city has recently been improved by not only better local roads, but also two roundabouts in the city’s residential areas.
High water levels of the river Sava have been restrained by the coastal embankment whose long term significance for the city that lies on both banks of the river is truly invaluable.
