A green oasis in the heart of Srem
Sremska Mitrovica has significant potential for tourism development. The sites of ancient Sirmium, including the Imperial Palace, part of the old town core in Žitni Trg (Wheat Square), and the Basilica of Saint Demetrius, as well as the Museum of Srem, known for its richness, value, and rarity of exhibits, especially from the period of the Roman Empire, rank among the most important institutions of its kind in the country, attracting great attention from both domestic and foreign visitors. The Lazar Vozarević Gallery of Paintings is a place every tourist should visit.

In the vicinity of Sremska Mitrovica there are well-known picnic places and resorts within the National park Fruska gora (Lezimir and Letenka), as well as numerous monasteries on Fruska gora. There is a great potential for river tourism due to the Sava river, whose course in Sremska Mitrovica is ideal for these sorts of recreational activities (the city has a modern coastal embankment and the possibility of docking ships, as well as an arranged beach, one of the most attractive in Serbia). Another natural attraction is a special nature reserve Swamp Zasavica and the projects for presentation of archeological and architectural potential of the city have been initiated as well.
The project of covering and revitalization of the Imperial palace of Sirmium which started in 2006 was one of the most significant of its kind in Serbia. The visitor centre was opened in December 2009 with 2680 m² of the site covered. It is a unique object, both a museum and a tourist attraction, which presents archeological exhibits of Sirmum and digital animations, has a souvenir shop, a café and a walkway for the visitors to stroll around and admire the remains of the palace.
An integral part of the tourist and cultural offer of the city of Sremska Mitrovica is the Museum of Srem. Since 1946, the exhibits related to the city’s history, from the very beginning to the present day, have been kept and presented there.
In 2006 a representative pedestrian zone which connects the triangular squares of Mitrovica and leads to the riverfront was completed. In the first stage of the project two squares were reconstructed – St. Demetrius’ and St. Stephen’s and the facades of public objects and private houses from the 18th and the 19th century were fully restored. The second stage of the project will include the extension of the pedestrian zone towards the Sava and the restoration of Zitni square, i.e. the restoration and transformation of the archeological site, which occupies the better part of the square, into an open amphitheater.
Near the city there is a National park Fruska gora with forests and breathtaking glades, an ideal place for relaxation and recreation. Fruska gora is adorned by numerous Orthodox monasteries whose cultural and historical importance is invaluable and which for centuries have preserved national identity and spirituality of Serbian people.
A special nature reserve Zasavica, located in Macva, is the home to some extremely rare plant and animal species. The nature in the reserve, which has been intact for thousands of years, is a true gem. The forestry holding in Sremska Mitrovica has also been looking after 40 thousand hectares of exceptionally valuable, mostly oak forests, rich in big and small game, which attract hunters from all over the world.
Sport fishing can be organized on the Sava and artificial lakes (reservoirs) on Fruska gora. A lot of effort is made to promote nautical tourism on the Sava, for which there are great opportunities. In recent years Sremska MItrovica has also been nurturing event tourism which has been improving in quality and attendanceyear on year.
